Our orchard takes its name from the historic sandstone quarry that operated on the property before the Civil War. A luxury building material in its day, the sandstone from our farm was transported by rail and water throughout the Midwest and Canada. Today, the quarries are filled with water and make great summertime swimming holes and gorgeous backdrops to hikes through the woods. The crate itself is a beautiful wooden box, handmade by our Amish friend Dan Weaver. (Dan also makes all the bushel-sized crates we use in the field for harvesting.) When you finish your apples, save the crate for storage in your own barn, pantry, or toy room!
